Designing for Spatially Aware Devices
Much of my experience has focused on creating camera features that are expressive and easy to use. Designing camera features for Instagram Direct & Stories challenged me to push the use of AR technology. I applied spatial capabilities such as face tracking, segmentation and plane tracking etc in new ways that helped distinguish Instagram’s camera in a crowded market.
Spatial UX/ UI for Stories
Spatial capabilities such as face tracking and body tracking can be used in camera apps to understand the proximity between the subject and the operator in real time. Proximity can be used to infer context which helps an app define its own state. For example, if the distance between a subject and the device is longer than the length of an arm, it’s likely not to be a selfie. And as the proximity of the subject change so does its salience on screen.
Although, face tracking is often associated with virtual face masks and avatars, Instagram Stories uses face tracking to help people create beautiful compositions without effort. I used face tracking to build AR filters that compose graphics around the subject. This use of spatial awareness in Instagram Stories inspired an entire series of filters that easily compose the subjects that matter most.
Prototype Design
Working alongside our core technology partners, I help ensure the features we create are rooted in human centered design principles. I design through applied technical knowledge and include functional prototypes and technical proofs in my design materials. Often my work leads to new patents in addition to new features and greater engagement.
